2010 Summer New Anime 2

みつどもえ

Mitsubasama!? To be honest, I wouldn't have picked this anime because of its lolicon style as the characters look like they're from kindergarten, not elementary school... But I'm just glad that I haven't dropped it because I'm instantly turned on by its hilarious, nonsense and hentai plots. There's absolutely no dead air but continuous funny gags mixing with some touching moments like the ending. As more classmates are introduced, the anime just get funnier. None of the characters is wasted and they're all a little different/weird like Miku's mother (voiced by Kikuko Inoue!?) the masochist who begs Mitsuba sama to punish her o.O There're a lot of funny jokes on recurring themes like Gachi Rangers, the triplets' suspicious father, Hitobai's scary expression, Mitsuba vs Miku rivalry, Futaba vs Shinya Satou's admirers rivalry, Chikubi, etc and they just never get old. The performances by the CVs are just excellent from the triplets to all the minor characters and it's a very well produced animation by a new studio, Bridge. What makes me even happier is that season two is greenlit (Yeah!). This is one of the best comedies I've ever watched. Period. And I just can't wait to see the sequel.

二舎六房の七人

What a pure hot blood story about friendship and brotherhood. Facing tons of obstacles, injustice, unfairness, etc in the society, the six protagonists, Mario, Suppon, Baremoto, Jo, Cabbage and Heitai from building 2 cell 6 never give up, and are still strong and chasing their dreams. It's very unfortunate that their mentor, An-chan, is killed before he'd see what they achieve but he continues to live within their hearts. After the boys are done with their unfinished business with Ishihara the guard and Dr. Sasaki from the reformatory, it looks like there're no more real antagonists as the other bad guys are just a peace of cake afterward. It's kind of weird that all the boys have their own chapters except for Heitai, who is kind of not that well-connected with the other characters because he joins the army? Well, even his so-called best friend, Cabbage, has his own silly yakuza story... Also, there're way too many frozen moments after they're released which are kind of disrupting the flow of the story as they appear too often like three or four times in a episode. The ultimate happy ending seems too good to be true since Mario's right fist heals like a miracle in the end. Overall, it's just a very good anime adaptation from a great manga.

学園黙示録

... well, now we all know Saeko will get wet when killing zombies... For a fan service anime, HOTD actually has a pretty good story but it's, of course, always under the shadow of its non-stop zombie attacks and fan services... Who knows a woman will regain her composure if one squeezes her tits hard enough and the best pose to snip is above somebody's breasts... What a valuable lesson!? HOTD has a good OP but too many EDs and none stands out except the first one 君と太陽が死んだ日. Whether one likes it or not, it looks like there is gonna be a sequel and the Highschool of Fan Services will resume perhaps sometime in the future...

HEROMAN

"Heroman O-Spark~" When Joey's controller glows red, he becomes Xam'd in the end... Bones is good at producing high quality original animation but there are still lots of unanswered questions like the reason Joey is being chosen and little explanation of Heroman's skills. Moreover, the stories on the uninhabited island and mine are kind of a weak bridge between the battle of Dr. Minami and  the resurgent of skrugg. Personally, I would like a little more focus on Will after he's turned into skrugg and is out there all by himself. For a studio that rarely produces sequels, it's kind of surprising to see an ending implying a second season because to me, Heroman is no Full Metal Alchemist...

K-ON!!

"Not that great but still wanna hear more?" Finally, there's a song sung by all club members instead of Yui/Mio. Azusa's ultimate meltdown... there's what the audience have been expecting for the whole season... Hopefully, Ui and Jun will join her next school year or Azusa'll be left with the pet only. Sawako also sheds a few tears but she's able to tough it out until she's alone in the empty classroom. Comparing to season one, second two is just long, slow and once again full of repetition (the cultural festival and summer camp vicious cycle). There're certainly some new stuff related to music like the summer music festival and a full episode dedicated to HTT's live performance at cultural festival but most of them are irrelevant and ok funny. K-ON! needs to end, and Kyoto Animation should move on to something else and not to just sell moe again for the sake of saimoe tournament.

世紀末オカルト学院

The plot speeds up a lot after Maya's fake death... So many twists in the final three episodes: Chihiro is the white mage, Mikaze is the black mage and last but not least Maya's father's still alive. Eventually, it turns out neither Maya nor Mikaze is the Nostradamus Key but the encounter of the useless protagonist Fumiaki with his younger self is the real key... That's really a lot to absorb comparing to what we have before is just battling monsters of the week every two episodes. The last minute Fumiaki'sFumiaki's world now will not affect the future he's coming from, I do want to see the future married Maya...

会長はメイド様!

Donno why it takes so long for them to kiss... even after Usui touches Misaki's boobs... Congrats on Usui's patience as he certainly does everything he can as a perverted outerspace alien/stalker/dog to win the heart of the violence man-hater student president/maid... Anyway, their relationship progresses very slowly as they just keep fooling around, and none of them makes a serious attempt to confess his/her feelings. Meanwhile, there's really no competition throughout the season except for the late appearance of Misaki's childhood friend/transfer/gluttony/dog (a newcomer to join the dog fighting...) who doesn't seem to be a big threat at all. To me, it hurts to see the deteriorating quality of the anime in the second half of the season as we have a floating ghost in the sky and the three idiots completely lose their human forms in the maid cafe... Also, the ED does hint a little bit of Usui's dark past which the main story never reveals perhaps because nobody wants to ruin the lighthearted romantic comedy genre?

生徒会役員共

Thanks for reminding me that the second season of 薄桜鬼 will air next after the conclusion of this anime... I do enjoy some of the jokes but feel that a lot of time is wasted on those stupid commercials/tv/whatever... What a great way to introduce a new character by just giving her a few appearances in the finale (so you think you will have a second season?)... By the way, the stupid meeting in the end is just another poor effort to sum up all the famous scenes (whether they exist or not) in the anime. Even thought this anime is known for its perverted subjects, there are actually only four actual perverts: the president, secretary, the student council's adviser and the protagonist's sister and on the other hand, they are surrounded by lots of tsukkomi characters like the protagonist, treasurer and the cut scenes in between stories. I guess the more ero the girl is, the more moe and funnier she becomes, and ero boy is just hentai and no one will like it...

オオカミさんと七人の仲間たち

"Once upon a time, there's a boring anime called Okamisan taken place in Otogi..." To me, this anime is very consistent... at the bottom. Although the character design and quality are quite good, there's nothing really interesting about this anime: typical useless protagonist and tsundere female character, predictable story development, weak battle scenes, below average OPEDs, stupid open-ended finale and the extremely annoying narrator.
